We partnered with Patexx for a deep dive into modern dancehall—an influential genre of Jamaican pop music originating in the late 1970s. Its name is owed to the spaces where popular Jamaican recordings were aired by local sound systems. Initially, the genre was a more sparse version of reggae than the roots style, which dominated much of the 1970s. In the mid-1980s, however, digital instrumentation became more prevalent, changing the sound considerably and becoming increasingly characterized by faster rhythms.

In many ways, dancehall was the mother of hip hop with the vocals sung in a rap-like fashion. But modern dancehall evolved in a way that the vocal leads are more melodic. This pack pays homage to old school dancehall artists such as Bounty Killer, Shabba Ranks, Capleton, Beenie Man, and Yellow Man but also the modern melodic interpretation like Koffee, Busy Signal, Shenseea, and Popcaan. Find textured, atmospheric loops, bells, claps, mallets, drums, guitars, and of course, vocals to add dancehall flavor to your productions.
